I’m here to tell you about the Broadway–Armory Historic District, an important part of Providence, Rhode Island, just west of downtown. This place has been around for a long time, with most of its growth happening from the 1830s to the 1910s. It’s shaped a bit like an upside-down boot.
The main streets are Broadway, between Dean and Messer, and Dexter Field, which runs from Cranston Street to Grove Street. Most of the houses here are made of wood and are on small lots. You’ll see a lot of shops on Broadway and Westminster Street.
At the south end of Dexter Field, there’s the Cranston Street Armory, a big building that’s hard to miss. This field used to be where the militia trained. There are over 1,000 old buildings in this area that are really important to history.
The district got onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and they added a few more buildings to it in 2008.
Now, let me tell you about the Dexter Training Ground. It’s a park now, but it used to be a military training field, donated to Providence by a guy named Ebenezer Knight Dexter. During the Civil War, soldiers camped and trained here, including Rhode Island’s first Black company. And in 1917, soldiers also prepared here to go to World War I.
